10 Things You Didn’t Know About Lionel ‘Leo’ Messi

Lionel Messi is widely considered to be the best player in the world at the moment and some even believe the Argentine is the best to have ever played the beautiful game. At 23 years of age he has accomplished much more than anyone could have hoped for and his life is pretty much an open book for soccer bettingfans around the globe. However, there are some things that you probably didn’t know about the Barcelona star.

1.) Messi’s style of play, impressive technical skills and small physique earned him comparisons with the legendary Diego Armando Maradona, and it is interesting that the Barcelona forward managed to mimic Maradona’s two most famous goals he had scored in the World Cup game against England. Messi first scored a brilliant goal after a solo effort against Getafe, before scoring with his hand against Espanyol in the very same season.

2.) Messi was asked to play for Spain national team, but decided to wait for a call-up from Argentina. Had he accepted a call from La Furia Roja, the Argentine would now have probably owned a World Cup winner’s medal.

3.) His debut for Argentina only lasted for around 40 seconds. That was the time he spent on the pitch before being sent off. The fact that he hadn’t deserved the red card was probably poor consolation at the time.

4.) You may be surprised to hear that not only girls drop their pants in front of Messi, but some guys as well. A man was so desperate to get a picture with Messi that he chased the Argentine around the airport and when he finally thought he had caught him, a clothing failure prevented him from accomplishing his mission.

5.) In March 2010 Messi became UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and he now works with the organization helping children around the globe.

6.) While the whole world loves watching Messi from the comfort of their homes, the Barcelona star once said that he never watched highlights of himself.

7.) In the Champions League game against Panathinaikos, a Greek fan invaded the pitch only to show Messi the middle finger, probably tired of constantly watching the Argentine making fun of PAO’s defence.

8.) He won the 2009 Ballon d’Or award in front of Cristiano Ronaldo, by collecting 473 out of possible 480 votes. How do you think the Portuguese handled the results?

9.) Barcelona signed the Argentine when he was just 13 with the scouts needing just half an hour to realize the player’s massive potential. That will soon prove to be one of the best decisions in the history of football.

10.) Following Barcelona’s 6:2 victory over Real at Santiago Bernabeu, Messi achieved the unthinkable and received standing ovation from the home fans, having scored two goals to help his side record a memorable win. Cristiano Ronaldo would have nothing against getting the same treatment at Camp Nou, but Real will first have to beat Barca for that to happen.

Amazing Match: Barcelona Vs Chelsea 2-2 Highlights 24-04-12

Tuesday night’s Champions League semi-final between Chelsea and Barcelona was a game for the ages, a four-goal thriller capped by a rare Fernando Torres goal that resulted in a Chelsea victory. It was a roller-coaster of emotion that took Chelsea fans, Barcelona fans, and neutrals (see Gary Neville’s commentary clip when Torres scores the last goal) on an amazing and wildly unpredictable ride. But more than that, in conjunction with Barcelona’s recent home defeat against Real Madrid, it signals the beginning of the end of Barcelona’s reign as kings of the football world.
Chelsea, currently sixth in the Premier League table, came into the second leg of the match with a 1-0 advantage. Their display in the first leg in London was brave if somewhat fortunate. But that was at London; that was at home. Barcelona, the best team in the world (by far) for at least the last three seasons is an entirely different animal at the Nou Camp. Until their defeat by Real Madrid on Saturday, Barcelona hadn’t lost at home in 54 consecutive matches. They’ve been stifled in the Champions League before, notably against Inter Milan, but they still won the home leg.
Before the match, if you had asked me which of Chelsea and Barcelona would end up in the final in Munich, I would have answered Barcelona. I would have said that with great conviction and confidence. And I suspect the vast majority of soccer fans would have agreed with me. After all, Chelsea are hardly having their best season in recent memory (and that is putting it nicely).
But maybe the signs were there. Barcelona’s loss against Real Madrid over the weekend was the first Real Madrid ‘Clasico’ (the name for Barcelona vs. Real Madrid matches in Spain) victory in their last 10 tries in La Liga and the Champions League. The loss also ended their run of 3 consecutive La Liga titles. The Barcelona of recent times, without Eto’o, Villa or Ibrahimovic, have not been clinical in front of net. The passing and possession is there, but aside from Messi, there are no out and out goal scorers in the side. And that was their downfall against Chelsea, with three quarters of the possession rendered meaningless by missed chance after missed chance.
This is not to say that Barcelona is no longer a great team.  In fact, I expect them to win a Champions League (or two) in the near future. But they are no longer alone at the top. Mourinho’s Real Madrid are now their equal. The elite of the elite in Europe now numbers two.
This is not to take anything away from Chelsea. Chelsea have always been able to play Barcelona close and their rugged defending paid off. John Terry’s sending off was reaffirmation of his quality of character, and made Chelsea’s task border on impossible. Needing to score against Barcelona at Camp Nou with only 10 men all the while preventing the Catalans from scoring? Fantasy. It couldn’t be done. But a beautiful Ramires chip and a cool Torres finish later and we have poetic justice for 2009 when Chelsea were denied several possible penalties and went out in the semi-final to a last second Iniesta goal.
Still, with Ivanovic, Terry, Meireles and Ramires out for the final against Bayern Munich, Chelsea have no chance at winning the final. Then again, that statement has a familiar ring to it.

Norwich City 0-3 Liverpool Luis Suarez Hatrick HD Video

Luis Suarez has had a hell of a topsy-turvy season. The racial taunting of Patrice Evra, a Liverpool side that’s well below expectations, and a personal goal drought as I’ve lost count of how many times he’s hit the woodwork this season. But today he scored his first hat trick for the Reds against Norwich City (0-3 win at Carrow Road). The first was a pinpoint pass from Steven Gerrard. The second was a laser strike. The third was an incredible 45-yard bomb that can only be described in the parlance of the Guardian’s James Richardson: WOOF!

Chelsea vs Bayern | UEFA Champions League Final 2012 - Promo

Favourites to win this season's Champions League Final are Bayern Munich as they meet Chelsea on their home ground of the Allianz Arena on Saturday 19th May. Both sides defied the odds by winning their respective semi-finals against the two fancied Spanish clubs. Chelsea beat Barcelona 3-2 on aggregate following a fine defensive performance over both legs, but especially in the second leg in the Camp Nou where they lost captain John Terry to a red card in the first half.
Bayern Munich were also underdogs in their semi-final with Real Madrid, despite winning the first leg 2-1 in Germany. Two quick goals in the first half of the second leg at the Bernabey put Jose Mourinho's side in the driving seat but a penalty from Arjen Robben left the score at 2-1 at full time. Extra time couldn't seperate the two sides and Bayern won a penalty shoot-out to book their place in the final.
There will be 6 players unable to play in the final because of suspensions. David Alaba, Luiz Gustavo and Holger Badstuber will be missing for the Germans whilst John Terry, Branislav Ivanovic, Ramires and Raul Meireles will all be missing for Chelsea. There will still be plenty of talent on the pitch with the likes of Mario Gomez, Franck Ribery, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba all likely to feature prominently in the first goalscorer betting.
Roberto Di Matteo is still just the interim manager for Chelsea following Andres Villas Boas departure earlier in the season, whilst Bayern have missed out on their domestic title with Borussia Dortmund taking the honours.
Bayern are odds on to lift the Champions League and also odds on favourites with most bookmakers to win the match in 90 minutes. The German side are looking to add to their four Champions League/European Cup victories, the last in 2001, whilst Chelsea are bidding to win the tournament for the first time in their history in their second final appearance, losing on penalties to Man Utd in 2008.

Stoke city vs Arsenal 1-1 Amazing Goal Crouch 28042012

Following a home defeat to Wigan and a 0-0 draw with Chelsea last weekend, Arsenal's aspirations of securing Champions League qualification suffered a fresh setback when Peter Crouch headed home after only 10 minutes.
Robin van Persie responded within five minutes with his 28th league goal of the season but despite appealing vigorously for a penalty when Yossi Benayoun was brought down in the second half, Arsenal were unable to find a winner and have now won just once in five visits to Stoke.
With Newcastle losing 4-0 at Wigan to sit four points behind Arsenal, the damage inflicted by the draw was lessened, though Tottenham and Chelsea can move to within four and five points of their London rivals respectively with victories on Sunday. All three teams will have a game in hand over Arsenal after the conclusion of the weekend's football.
Benayoun returned to the Arsenal starting XI as a replacement for Theo Walcott, who had been struck down with a hamstring injury in the 0-0 draw with Chelsea last weekend. Arsenal also boasted the newly crowned Footballer of the Year and PFA Player of the Year in their ranks, though Van Persie was without a goal from open play since March 12 - a run of 12 hours.
Games between Stoke and Arsenal are invariably painted as a clash of football cultures - caricatures of Wenger's artists against Pulis's brutes - and this encounter settled into a familiar pattern, with the home side looking to bombard Arsenal from the air and the visitors patiently constructing moves with the ball at their feet.
Rather counter-intuitively for a side seen as vulnerable at the back, Arsenal had actually conceded a league-low five headed goals all season, but Stoke increased that tally after only 10 minutes through Crouch. The striker was involved in the build-up with a fine touch before Stoke played the ball wide to Matthew Etherington, and his cross from the left was met by Crouch with a fine header into the bottom corner.
At 0-0 Arsenal had already failed to convert one excellent chance when Tomas Rosicky found Van Persie at the back post with a glorious cross, only to see Asmir Begovic produce a wonderful save to repel the striker's firm header.
However, the two combined to greater effect just five minutes after Stoke's opener. Benayoun's high pressing allowed Arsenal to win the ball back on the left wing and Rosicky floated in a delicious cross for Van Persie, who this time converted with a side-footed volley from close range as he sauntered onto the ball.
Aaron Ramsey - returning to a stadium that holds desperate memories for him following the serious injury he sustained following a challenge from Ryan Shawcross in February 2010 - also thumped an effort just wide from 20 yards while Benayoun was also denied by a fine save from Begovic as Arsenal threatened sporadically.
However, a lack of quality in the final third from Arsenal, combined with Stoke's reluctance to open up, resulted in a rather sterile end to the first half.
The second half continued in a similar vein, though Van Persie did threaten to score a second when he produced a good header from Bacary Sagna's cross from the right, only for Begovic to save in the centre of his goal.
Stoke, with a mid-table finish assured, were offering little to no threat and Arsenal were not at their free-flowing best. However, they did have a decent claim for a penalty turned down after 75 minutes when Glenn Whelan tripped Benayoun from behind. Shawcross also escaped punishment when blocking a ferocious drive from Vermaelen with his arms, though the offence took place just after the defender had strayed outside of the penalty area.
The arrival of Cameron Jerome after 78 minutes briefly saw Stoke flicker into life in the final third as the forward latched onto a pass from Huth and saw a vicious drive parried away by Szczesny at his near post.
As the seconds ticked away, Vermaelen went close for the visitors with a low free kick but in injury time Arsenal were almost beaten when Sagna was forced to make a fantastic clearance from four yards out with a host of Stoke players lurking to tap the ball in.
Arsenal's performance did not merit a defeat, but nor did it merit a victory as they stumbled again with the end of the season firmly in sight.
